Beginner duets for guitar and piano.

Greetings - I am a new member. I would like to find some beginner sheet music to play with my son. He is six years old and playing piano. I have been playing classical guitar for 25 years and play things like Romanza, Adelita, Classical Gas, etc. I would like to play some simple classics with my son like Scarborough Fair, Ode to Joy by Beethoven, or anything you can suggest. Many thanks in advance.

Hi, Greg:

Welcome to Delcamp!

It's great that you want to play duets with your son. I'm not an expert on the piano-guitar duo literature but I think you can take any two part material,e.g., like Bach's Two Part Inventions and divide up the parts between you. You could even add some extra bass for either you or your son. Likewise, you could take any piano music and you could play the right hand part or improvise a part of your own. The improvisation might do your musicianship some real good if you haven't done it.

Now, for some suggestions that do work:

You should subscribe to the 002 Messages group as soon as you've made your second post. Thank you both for the replies to my post. I have not previously been a member of a bulletin board on-line so it may take me awhile to get the hand of it. I did read the rules and I have added my location. To qualify for a second post, do I need to ask another question or just reply to someone else's post?

No, a post is a post, so you should be good to go now and sign up for the 002 group. :)

Check out the "Search of sheet music forum". There's a sticky thread there for the Rischel collection of piano and guitar duets. Some of those might fit your needs.

Good luck with it. It warms my heart to see a parent wanting to play duets with their kid. This is just awesome in my book. What a wonderful experience to share with your child. 8)

Thanks! I have now applied to 002.

I am truly fortunate that my son likes music. He is taking piano and violin lessons and really enjoys both. Tonight I found some simple sheet music and he began learning Swan Lake from the Nutcracker. I will look at the Rischel collection. Thanks for the tip!

Greg,
As I'm learning to play the piano as well as the guitar, I purchased Anton Diabelli's "18 Pieces for Guitar and Piano", published by Kalmus, with hopes of playing both parts. This might be worth considering when your son reaches the early intermediate stage.

Thank you for the recommendation. He's just starting out so we are looking for very simple sheet music at this stage. I will keep your suggestion in mind. Many thanks and have a great evening.
